Synopsis
In 1873, the driver and guard of an Arizona-bound stagecoach abandon five passengers in the desert because one of them, Loi Yan Wu, is feared to have smallpox. A sixth passenger, Indian agent Hiram Best, inadvertently remains inside the stage. Besides the stricken young woman, the forsaken group includes gunslinger Jess Dollard, gambler Dade Coleman, U. S. Cavalry Maj. John Southern, and Dr. Ann Thompson, who has diagnosed the young woman's disease as chickenpox. [According, to one source, Coleman is the gunman and Dollard, the gambler.] Setting out on foot, the passengers find the stage with the bodies of the three men, victims of an Indian attack. Coleman hoards a canteen of water and steals Dollard's gun, thereby gaining power over the others. Dollard is bitten by a rattlesnake, but he is nursed back to health. Coleman, distraught, forces him out of the camp along with Loi Yan Wu, the object of anti-Chinese sentiments, and then murders both Major Southern and Dr. Thompson. The driver of an arriving stage, however, mistakes him for an attacking Indian and shoots him, leaving only Loi Yan Wu and Dollard as survivors.
