Synopsis

Drifter and sports car racing enthusiast Nick Barrow kills an old man during a robbery and flees to a small town, where he becomes romantically involved with Laura, a café waitress. Learning of an upcoming auto race, Barrow, obsessed with speed, enters and wins. After a fistfight with Laura's boyfriend Tommy, Barrow moves on to another small town where he seeks anonymity working as a mechanic at an auto garage owned and run by the amiable Ace Benton. Ace's top mechanic is Hap Farley, who races against the wishes of his concerned sister, Linda. When Barrow begins flirting with Hap's girl friend, Peggy Hendrix, the mechanics quickly become enemies and Barrow vows to run Hap off the road in a future race. Barrow soon takes up with the fiery Gina Lombardi, unaware that the county sheriff has been trailing the old man's murderer by the tracks of the specialty racing tires on Barrow's car. When sensuous dancer Ella distracts Barrow, a jealous Gina reports to the sheriff that after learning of the tire investigation, Barrow changed those on his car. Meanwhile, at a big race, Barrow tries to force Hap off the track several times, but seeing the police closing in on him, panics and attempts to escape. The police pursue Barrow and eventually shoot out his tires, causing Barrow to lose control of the car, which plunges over a cliff.
