Synopsis
As Melody Smith and Fuzzy, his guitar-picking partner, ride toward Dry Gulch, they are arrested for cattle rustling by the town's crooked sheriff. Later, the two men are freed by Mr. Morgan, the local hotel owner who has hired them both to sing at his establishment and investigate the sudden death of Uncle Hardy, a respected area rancher. After Morgan informs Melody that the bullets that killed Hardy were dumdum 45's, Melody entertains the cowboys with his songs. At the hotel, Melody meets the new schoolteacher, Jeanette Du Mont, a French woman who also catches the eye of Harry Skelton, the town boss and a cohort of the sheriff. To facilitate his robbery plans, Skelton arranges for all of the town's men to greet Jeanette in her classroom the next morning. While Melody sings for Jeanette, Kelly and his band of outlaws rob the hotel safe. The sheriff sends his posse north, knowing that Kelly went south, but Fuzzy tracks the outlaws and tells Melody about the sheriff's duplicity. With Fuzzy, Melody locates Kelly's hideout and is nearly overcome by the outlaws. Wise to Melody, the sheriff orders his men to visit the hotel and shoot the singer in the middle of a performance, but Melody outdraws them. Convinced of Skelton's guilt, Melody breaks into his office and finds the dumdums, but is caught by the sheriff and thrown in jail. As Melody sits in his cell, Jeanette asks the sheriff to arrest Skelton for the murder of her father, another local rancher. The sheriff tells her to seek a warrant from the county seat, then plots with Skelton to have her killed. With the help of Fuzzy, Melody escapes and intercepts Skelton in time to save the grateful mademoiselle.
