Synopsis
Rancher "Roaring" Dan McPhail and his ranchhands, Tick and Jane Belden are riding to town to meet Dan's son Horace, whom he has not seen in years, when they meet Eris Brooks, who claims that she has just witnessed Charlie Gregg murder Delf Rogers. After ordering Jane to escort Eris to the safety of her Uncle Frank's ranch, Dan continues to town to meet his son. When Dan finds Horace drinking with Thorndyke, the leader of a gang of rustlers who have been ruthlessly ambushing range riders and stealing their herds, Dan denounces his son and Tick takes the young tenderfoot to the Brooks ranch until Dan has time to cool off. There Eris, who was acquainted with the real Horace in New York, realizes that this man is an impostor, but her uncle cautions her to remain silent. Later, in town, Casey Waters, Thorndyke's accomplice, recognizes Horace as Jim Reardon, the son of the famous marshal who was murdered by Thorndyke. Soon after, Eris confides her suspicions to Stuart Manning, the eastern attorney who has just been appointed special prosecutor in the Rogers murder case, and Manning tells her that Jim is impersonating Horace in order to bring his father's murderer to justice. Eris, who has fallen in love with Jim, is relieved by Manning's explanation. As the trial approaches, Thorndyke, Gregg's boss, orders Eris kidnapped before she can testify against Gregg. Jim follows Thorndyke's men to the cabin, where they have imprisoned Eris and, after rescuing her, he brings her to the courthouse as the state's star witness. Just as Eris begins to testify, Jane, a crack shot, sees one of Thorndyke's men take aim at the witness stand, and she fires at the man, triggering a shootout. In the melee, Dan is wounded and Thorndyke escapes, but Jim pursues and captures him. After Thorndyke and his men are jailed, Dan confesses that he knew that Jim was not his son, but nevertheless is proud for him to be known as the son of Roaring Dan.
