Synopsis

Crooner Buzz Mason and his band, the Flying Aces, perform over a loudspeaker from their airplane as they approach a small town. Their stunt causes a number of disruptions and accidents, including one involving the sheriff, who smashes his new car into a vegetable wagon. After the sheriff orders Buzz to pay $3,000 in damages or go to jail, Buzz calls his father, John Mason, a New York advertising consultant, who insists that Buzz return and settle down to an orthodox job. Mason's offices and those of his competitor, Thomas Lane, are located in a building owned by Mrs. Henty, the head of a food products corporation. Mrs. Henty meets with Mason and Lane to offer them her advertising for the next year, and their arguing leads her to have them submit separate campaign outlines. Allan Howard, who works for Lane, has been spying for Mason on Lane's daugher Ann, who is designing sketches for the Posini Hosiery account, and trying to romance her. When Buzz, who has known Ann since college, arrives in town, he asks her for a date, but she rebuffs him for clowning his way through life. That night, Buzz sits with Ann and Howard in a club. When he is called to sing, Buzz invites Ann to join him. She is pleased by the experience, but when Buzz's friend and fellow band member, Della Dunn, arrives, Ann mistakes their affection for a romantic involvement and leaves upset with Howard. At her apartment door, Howard asks Ann to accompany him on his upcoming business trip to Bermuda and turn it into a honeymoon, but she does not give him an answer. Buzz is waiting in the apartment, and after he proposes, they agree that she will give him six months to change his behavior. They argue, however, when Buzz demands that she stop seeing Howard. The next day, after Mason finds that Buzz has invited all his band members into the board room and ordered lunches for them, he angrily tells them to get out, but gives Buzz the job of trying to get the Posini account. After Ann interests Posini in some of her sketches of women showing their legs in his hosiery, Buzz captures the account by using live models in the same settings and wearing the same outfits as in Ann's sketches. Thinking that Buzz stole her idea, Ann agrees to marry Howard on the boat leaving that night after the Henty audition. When Mason calls Howard and orders him to disrupt the Lane audition, Howard refuses, but their conversation is overheard by a pair of wacky window washers, Mike and Myrtle, who took the job hoping to get the chance to audition a song about Mrs. Henty's pickles. Mason hires a bunch of men to sit in the audience and disrupt Ann's performance. After Ann goes to the stage, Buzz learns about his father's plot from Mike and Myrtle. He quickly brings his own band members to the stage where, with Ann, they perform songs and get the audience to join in. Buzz then bows out of the competition, and the contract goes to Lane, who offers to share it with Mason. After Ann tells Buzz about her plans to marry Howard, Buzz socks him and takes his steamship tickets, which he presents to Ann, who is relieved to go with him. Mike and Myrtle, whose performance was a hit, are gratified to hear that Mrs. Henty plans to sign them on, until they learn that she wants to hire them to wash the windows on the other side of the building.
