Synopsis
Before Betty Gilbert leaves prison after serving an eighteen month sentence, Mary Winters, a dying inmate who has been like a mother to Betty, gives her newspaper clippings about her daughter, whose birth in prison resulted in the commutation of Mary's death sentence. Mary asks Betty not to let her daughter, Margaret Wilson, who, according to the most recent clipping, is about to marry a young doctor, ever know that she was born in prison. After Mary dies and Betty returns to her husband Harry Gilbert, a conman whose schemes landed Betty in jail, he reluctantly agrees to go straight, but when he finds the clippings, Gilbert suddenly suggests that they move to another town. He chooses Edgemont, where, unknown to Betty, Margaret and her family live. There Gilbert blackmails the Wilsons by threatening to tell Margaret's true parentage to the newspapers. Meanwhile, at Edgemont Hospital, where Margaret's fiancé, Dr. Robert Benson, has returned after studying in Europe, chief of staff Dr. Turner announces his intention to retire. Dr. Gordon White schemes to become Dr. Turner's successor, but Robert is the doctor's choice. When Margaret's father refuses to pay any more blackmail, Gilbert tells Margaret her parentage and Margaret, fearing that a scandal would ruin Robert's career, breaks their engagement. After Robert ejects Gilbert from the Wilson home, Gilbert reads about Robert's rivalry with White and makes an appointment to sell White the clippings. On the way to see White, Gilbert has an automobile accident, and although Robert tries to save him in surgery, Gilbert dies. White then gains possession of the clippings and threatens to make them public unless Robert resigns, but Betty, learning that her husband has died, demands the clippings from White. When he refuses to return them, she pulls a gun, and in the ensuing struggle, White is severely wounded. Fearing that White's wounds are so critical that he will not survive an operation, Robert refuses to operate, but when Margaret points out that Betty will be charged with murder if White dies, Robert agrees to the surgery and saves White's life. The police arrest Betty, but White, grateful to Robert, refuses to press charges and tells Robert of his desire to resurrect his professional ethics. Margaret and Robert then enlist Betty's help with their wedding.

Notes
Motion Picture Herald reviewed the film as Girl From Nowhere. That title was mentioned in news items in Hollywood Reporter in mid-June 1938, however, the particulars of those news items seem to refer to another Anne Nagel film made in July 1938 entitled The Circus Comes to Town.
