Synopsis
In the streets of Silver City, New Mexico, itinerant preacher Henry Lane decries the sinful influence of the town's newest inhabitant, a woman named Lil, who runs the Silver Lode Saloon. Suddenly, Rocky and Idaho, two henchmen working for Lil's lawyer, Steve Gentry, interrupt Henry's sermon and drag him away. On their way into Silver City, wandering Mexican American cowboy Cisco tells his sidekick Pancho that they are going to see Lil, whose beauty is widely praised. When they come across Henry lying bruised on the ground, he tells them how trouble came to Silver City: After town founder Jim Mason, who owned the saloon and nearby San Miguel mine, was killed during a mine cave-in, Lil arrived in town with a twenty-year-old marriage certificate dated the 15th of June establishing her as Jim's wife. After she claimed Mason's property, Lil put Steve in charge of the mine. Back at the saloon, Lil's maid Belle objects to Steve's violent treatment of a preacher, which, she points out, is not part of their scheme. A short time later, Cisco, Pancho and Henry enter the saloon, and Cisco fires his weapon into the air to attract the attention of the saloon patrons, who listen to Henry's announcement that services will be held on Sunday as usual. Cisco, Pancho and Henry leave the saloon and go down the street to begin converting a vacant building into the town's new church. When Idaho follows, shooting at Cisco, he is forced to kill him in self-defense. Realizing that Henry is in danger, Cisco and Pancho take him to a spot in the mountains called Satan's Cradle, where they pitch camp. There, Henry tells Cisco that because of a fire at the court house in Callaway, Oklahoma, Lil's marriage cannot be verified. Cisco then tells Henry to stay at the camp while he returns to the saloon. There, he catches Lil in a lie when he asks her why she would get married on the unlucky 13th, and she fails to correct him on the date. Later, Henry gives Cisco and Pancho directions to the mine, where they find the caved-in section. After finding a portion of burnt fuse, indicating Mason's death was murder, Cisco guesses that a second entrance was used by the escaping killer. Outside, meanwhile, Steve and Rocky dynamite the main entrance, then return to the saloon. When Steve tells Lil what they have done, she instructs Belle to pack her things so that they can leave on the next stage. A short time later, Cisco climbs through Lil's balcony window, while Steve's henchman Lucky, who saw Cisco sneak in, reports to his boss. Steve quickly climbs up to the balcony and eavesdrops on Cisco and Lil's conversation. He hears Cisco ask Lil to tell the sheriff what she knows, but Lil draws her gun and says she is leaving town. When she begins to implicate Steve in the plot, Steve fires through the window at her. Steve misses, and he and Rocky are later captured and taken to jail. When he learns that Lil has decided to speak to the sheriff, Cisco is satisfied that justice has finally been served. Cisco and Pancho then leave for California to search for the most beautiful woman in San Lorenzo.
