Synopsis

The community of Paradise Valley erupts in violence when the long-standing feud between the Carson and Sterling clans flares up and their neighbors are forced to take sides. Believing that his father Andy has been killed by a member of the Sterling family, Sunset Carson, who has lived in another state for many years, returns home. On the way, Sunset is attacked by three men, but escapes without being able to identify them. Upon his arrival home, Sunset is met by Ward Tuttle, his father's foreman, and discovers that Andy was only wounded during the attack upon him three weeks earlier. Sunset is overjoyed to see his father, but Andy warns him that the simmering feud started again because of the recent death of Linc Sterling, for which Andy was blamed. Andy explains to Sunset that he and Linc Sterling settled the valley, but that after Andy married, Linc's wife Harriet developed an overpowering hatred of the Carsons and began the feud. In order to save Sunset, whom Harriet had vowed to kill, Andy sent him away, and over the years, fought off Harriet and Linc's violence. Andy assumes that his attacker was either Melinda or Martin, Linc and Harriet's twin children. As Andy is relating his story, a hand comes through the window and Andy is shot. Sunset rushes outside but finds only "Pop" Jordan, a local drunk. When he spots a vanishing rider, however, Sunset gives chase and finds Melinda, who swears that she did not kill Andy. Sunset, who will not fight a woman, vows vengence upon Martin, but when Melinda returns home, she learns that Martin is not responsible for the attack either. Harriet is happy that Andy is dead and encourages her children to end the Carson line by killing Sunset. Soon after, rustlers raid Sunset's cattle, and one of the bandits is fatally wounded as Sunset's men fight back. The dying man tells Sunset that both he and the Sterlings are "being played for suckers," prompting Sunset to deduce that a third party is fomenting the feud. Sunset explains his theory to Sheriff James Edwards, who, along with Melinda, agrees that it would be advantageous to call a truce and seek out the hidden culprits. When Sunset and his men meet with the Sterlings in town, however, an unseen assailant shoots at Sunset, who assumes that the Sterlings are responsible. Sunset challenges Martin to a gunfight, and Harriet warns her son that she will shoot him herself if he does not participate. Desperate to protect her brother, Melinda knocks him out and disguises herself in his clothes, then goes to town to meet Sunset. Meanwhile, Pop, who is the secret leader of the gang aiming to kill off the Carsons and Sterlings and take over their rich lands, orders his men to kill whoever participates in the gunfight. Melinda is shot and wounded, for which the just-arrived Martin blames Sunset, but Sunset quickly proves his innocence. Sunset and the Sterlings then defend themselves as the gang opens fire, and soon the culprits are rounded up, although Harriet is wounded in the fray. Before she dies, Harriet confesses that she hated Sunset's father after he rejected her and married someone else, and also that she killed her husband Linc after enduring a lifetime of taunts about her unrequited love for Andy. Sunset comforts Melinda after Harriet dies, and the couple looks forward to building a new future together.
