Synopsis

As some Indians believe that it brings bad luck to leave their ancestral lands, a tribe headed by Chief Eagle Feather is pleased when Eddie Dean, the local Indian agent, and his friend Ezra tell them that the U.S. government has agreed that they can live on their land as long as they keep the peace. Eddie is especially happy to deliver the good news because, as an orphan, he was reared by them. In a nearby town, however, corrupt selectmen Matthews, Marks and Rockwood hire a man named Chico to run the Indians off the land, so that they can mine its silver deposits. Chico in turn hires some renegade Indians, who kill two members of the tribe, leaving a child orphaned. Eddie takes the boy to the mission to be cared for by Father Sullivan and names him Little Brown Jug. Later, Eddie asks Captain Hadley at the nearby fort to protect the Indians, but Hadley refuses without orders from the government, and Eddie is disappointed by the captain's lack of sympathy. When Father Sullivan asks the selectmen to post a reward for the killers, they angrily send him away. Meanwhile, Chico distributes guns to the renegade Indians, and they attack a stagecoach. Eddie, Ezra and Father Sullivan, who are returning from town, rescue the passengers. Despite the passengers' demands, Eddie refuses to let the stage continue its journey until he knows what happened. Eagle Feather suspects that Wildhorse, who was banished from the tribe, is behind the attack. When the selectmen complain to Hadley, he offers to talk to Eagle Feather and help capture Wildhorse if he is persuaded that Eagle Feather is telling the truth. Back at the mission, Melodie, one of the passengers, makes friends with Little Brown Jug. Determined to get rid of Eddie, the selectmen now complain to Eddie's boss, Commissioner Wright, who fires him. Despite this, Eddie vows to have Eagle Feather tell his side of the story. Meanwhile the selectmen plot with Chico to prevent Eagle Feather from talking. As Eddie and Eagle Feather ride to town, the renegade Indians attack them. Eddie and Eagle Feather evade the attackers, but during the ensuing shootout at the mission, Little Brown Jug is shot and killed. Father Sullivan recognizes Chico among the attackers, and Eddie pursues him. After he captures Chico, Eddie allows him to escape and then follows him to Marks's place. There, he discovers the claims on the Indian land that were filed by the selectmen. During a shootout, Eddie and Ezra are rescued by the arrival of Eagle Feather and his men. Now that it is safe, the stagecoach continues its journey, but Melodie, having fallen in love with Eddie, remains behind to teach school at the mission.
