Synopsis

In April 1889, the government announces a land rush and Henry Rankin plans to homestead a piece of property that he has dreamed of owning. With his daughter Alice and his son Jim, Rankin starts for the prospective settler's camp, but on the road he is shot and badly wounded in a gun battle with Thad Dalton and his gang. A rancher named Breezy Larkin comes to the family's aid, and escorts them to camp. Breezy entertains Alice with ventriloquist tricks and makes friends with her dog, Tuffy. When the couple leaves Rankin unattended, Dalton steals the old man's map and, believing that there is "treasure" on the property, plans to claim the land for himself. Jim distrusts Breezy, who proves his loyalty by going to town for a doctor. There, he fights with Dalton, but escapes with Tuffy's help. During the land rush, Dalton reaches Rankin's spot first. Breezy outwits Dalton with ventriloquism, Dalton is arrested, and Henry Rankin claims his land, revealing that his "treasure" is not gold but the railroad's plan to build across his property.
