Synopsis

Cowboy Cal Brent and his sidekick Fuzzy hear a gun battle in the distance and go to help. As they approach, outlaw Walton and his gang ride away after killing Barry, a rancher, and burning his ranch. Cal and Fuzzy find Barry's boy Buddy, and after they bury the rancher, Cal promises Buddy that they will get his father's killer. Cal and Fuzzy take Buddy to the nearest ranch, which belongs to Dan Morgan, who has refused to sell his ranch to Evans, a man who says he needs good ranch land because water is drying out on his ranch. Morgan explains to Cal that a number of ranchers have received mysterious notes warning them to get out; after finding their stock killed, most of the ranchers got scared and sold out, but Barry decided to stay. Evans and Walton decide to attack Morgan to prevent the remaining ranchers from organizing. While Cal investigates a poisoned water hole, a member of Walton's gang knocks out Fuzzy and tries to kidnap Buddy, but Cal captures the outlaw. The man seems about to reveal his superior, when a shot from the distance kills him. When Morgan receives a wire that his niece Jeanie, a student out East who owns half the ranch, has cancelled her trip to the ranch, Cal correctly suspects that something is "fishy." The telegram is a fake, and Evans plans to have Walton take Jeanie across the border until he can make a deal with Morgan. Cal rescues Jeanie from men driving her to Walton, but she distrusts him, and when she tries to ride off on Cal's horse, the horse returns at Cal's whistle. Cal then leads Jeanie to a camp. When Morgan goes to meet his niece, Evans follows and shoots him. Evans then tells Jeanie that he was her father's best friend and that they were coming to rescue her from Cal when Cal shot her father. Evans calls the sheriff, who arrives with a posse and arrests Cal. Cal escapes from the sheriff and hides in the rocky hills with Fuzzy and Buddy. Jeanie suspects Evans and Walton and rides off. Cal sees her and leads her to the rocks. They have no guns, and when Walton and his men come, Cal tells Fuzzy to throw bullets in a fire so that they will think he and Fuzzy are armed. Cal rides through Walton's men and then leads the sheriff and his men back. Walton's men are captured, as Cal lassoes Evans and bests Walton in a fight. Jeanie and Cal then sing together on a swing, and Fuzzy tells Buddy that it looks like Cal's roaming days are over.
