Synopsis
Federal agent Bob Andrews visits his sister, Rose Carter, while on vacation and discovers her husband Jack has been charged with murdering his boss and stealing negotiable bonds. Bob traces the murder weapon to Joe Bradley, who is in jail on another charge. Bob then goes out with Sheriff Williams on an emergency case, and when Williams is forced to kill a murderer, Bob takes the rap in order to get himself put in jail in Bradley's cell. Meanwhile, Williams' daughter Joan, a newspaper reporter, visits the inmates for a good story. Eventually, Bob gets Bradley to admit he planted the gun on Jack. Bradley's attorney, Richard Shelby, who is also Rose's lawyer, visits Bradley and slips him a gun. With it, Bradley forces Bob to steal the keys from Williams, who has been knocked out, and Bradley escapes. Bob chases Bradley across the Rio Grande to a tavern, where Bob catches Bradley with Shelby. With the help of fellow agent George Bates, Bob wins a gunfight. Williams arrives in time to hear Bradley name Shelby as the murderer. His case solved, Bob is free to marry Joan.

Notes
This film was originally called Rio Grande Romance. For a period of time it was retitled Put on the Spot, under which title it was approved by the New York State Censors (3 July 1936) and reviewed by Variety (16 September 1936) and Film Daily (3 October 1936). In May 1937, it was shown in Lincoln, NE as Rio Grande Romance and was reviewed by Variety on May 12, 1937. Although the New York Variety review states that it was titled Rio Grande Romance after Peter B. Kyne's story, the title of Kyne's story was "One Day's Work."
