Riders of the West

Brief Synopsis

In this entry of Monogram's "Rough Riders" series (no relationship to the dull TV series of the 50's), Ma Turner (Sarah Padden) of Red Bluff sends for U.S.Marshal Buck Roberts (Buck Jones) to investigate a series of wide-spread rustling in the area. Town banker Miller (Walter McGrail), saloon-owner Duke Mason (Harry Woods) and the crooked sheriff (Lee Phelps) are in cahoots with rancher John Holt, but they double-cross and kill him. His son Steve (Dennis Moore) witnesses the murder and kills the sheriff. Buck arrives and arrests Steve. Marshal Tim McCall (Tim McCoy), posing as an outlaw, gains the confidence of the gang and engineers the escape, with Buck's knowledge, of Steve from the jail. Sandy Hopkins (Raymond Hatton), the third Marshal of the trio, poses as a peddler and learns that the gang intends to do away with Buck and rides to the Turner ranch to warn him. Red (Bud Osborne), a Turner ranch hand but also a member of the gang, overhears Buck telling Ma that Tim is really a U.S. Marshal, and he has Miller and Mason informed.

Synopsis

In Red Bluff, Wyoming, banker Miller, his partner, rancher John Holt, and the sheriff secretly are overtaking the valley by raiding ranches and then foreclosing on them when the ranchers are unable to make their mortgage payments. When her neighbor is murdered while helping to protect her herd, Ma Turner however, rails against the fact that everyone is losing their ranches. To quell Ma, Holt announces that he has sent for an investigator from the Cattlemen's Association, but secretly plans to kidnap the investigator and have an impostor take his place. Distrustful of everyone, Ma sends for her friend, Marshal Buck Roberts, to investigate, and Buck calls his fellow Rough Riders, Colonel Tim McCall and Sandy Hopkins, to help. As Tim and Buck ride into Red Bluff, they see Holt's gang attacking the stagecoach and kidnapping the investigator. Tim rescues the investigator, while Buck captures the gang and interrogates them, to no avail. When Holt returns to town without the investigator, he overhears Miller planning with saloon owner Duke Mason to double-cross him. He pulls his gun, but the sheriff shoots and kills him. Holt's son Steve, who is unaware of his father's underhanded dealings, defends him and shoots the sheriff. When Duke claims that Holt was the mastermind behind the raids and was attempting to kill them, Buck arrests Steve, partly for his own protection, as the ranchers want to lynch him for his father's crimes. Shortly after, Tim arrives in town posing as the investigator. Tim informs Duke that he is actually a notorious outlaw and demands a cut of Duke's deal. Later, Buck, Sandy and Tim meet privately and determine that Duke and Miller are trying to take over the valley. Buck reveals to Ma that the real investigator is hiding in his barn, but Ma's ranch hand Red, one of Miller's spies, finds out. Miller and Duke tell their head man Hogan to allow Tim to think he is joining the gang, but not reveal that they are the leaders. Tim suggests to Hogan that the gang spring Steve from jail and hide him, and, as he is the investigator, they will easily be able to take over the town. Tim frees Steve from jail and turns him over to Hogan, who has just sent a man to kill Buck. While Sandy hides in a tree to overhear where Hogan is taking Steve, Buck captures Red eavesdropping at Ma's ranch. Red is shot by one of his own men, however, and as Buck pursues the killer, Sandy joins up with him and they continue on to the hideout. Tim and Steve are taken hostage by the gang, but Buck and Sandy arrive in time to free them, and the Rough Riders chase Duke and Miller to town. While Tim captures Mason, Buck traps Miller and insists he burn the mortgages. With justice restored, Ma is made interim sheriff, and all the ranchers are thrilled to learn their mortgages have been destroyed. The three Rough Riders then part company and head for home.
