Synopsis
While on their way to the Arizona Rangers border post at Desert Wells, rangers Tex Rand, Doc Thornton and Pee Wee McDougall see a band of outlaws shooting at a stagecoach. The three rangers shoot two of the outlaws and chase away the others, who steal their horses. Tex, Doc and Pee Wee are thanked by one of the passengers, Louise Rogers, who continues across the border to Tecate after the rangers are let off the stage at the post. When Captain Hayes says that they have had problems with an organized bunch of cattle thieves working from below the border, Tex tells him a plan he has devised, which, he says, will take some time. After bandits raid a cattle ranch, Captain Hayes sends his men to guard every pass at the border. When Tex, guarding the Walker ranch with Doc and Pee Wee, sees Butch Regan, one of the bandits, shoot Captain Mendoza of the Mexican Rurales, Tex runs down Mendoza's bolting horse carrying the slumped rider and rescues Mendoza, whose wound is just a "crease." In gratitude, Mendoza offers his future assistance to Tex. Meanwhile, Jeffries, the leader of the gang, sends Pete, one of his men, to get Doc and Pee Wee to follow him. While they are led astray, Jeffries and his men rustle the Walker cattle. When he returns to the ranch, Pee Wee picks up a pocketbook purposely dropped by Pete. The pocketbook contains money and a note, which says, "Thanks boys, this is your split," and when it is found on Pee Wee, he and Doc are locked up. To prove their innocence, Tex deserts and goes to the cantina in Tecate, where he sings a duet with Louise Rogers, a singer there. When Jeffries, having read of Tex's desertion, offers him money to let him know when they are liable to run into any ranger patrols, Tex readily accepts. After a number of raids misfire, Regan, a gang member who is jealous of Louise's affection for Tex, suspects him and starts a fight in the cantina, but Tex knocks him out. Doc and Pee Wee arrive, having broken out of jail, but although Tex claims to have never seen them, Regan and two men overhear them conferring and ambush them. Tex escapes, but Doc and Pee Wee are captured and taken to the gang's hideout. Tex finds Mendoza and his men, and he is surprised to see Louise ride up. Louise, really an American secret service officer investigating the gang for the Mexican government, leads Tex and the Rurales toward the hideout. Informed of their approach by a lookout, Jeffries commands Regan to tell Tex to come alone, otherwise Doc and Pee Wee will be killed. Tex agrees, but tells Mendoza to come if he hears a shot fired. Doc and Pee Wee trick Pete into cutting their rope, and they escape and shoot Regan as Jeffries prepares to shoot Tex. Jeffries and his men are then chased and captured by the Rurales, Tex, Doc and Pee Wee. At the post, Captain Hayes reveals that Tex's desertion was part of the plan to capture the gang. Louise then joins Tex, Doc and Pee Wee as they ride and sing.
