Synopsis
The people of Palo Verde are incensed by the bold exploits of a group of bandits who have harassed them without end. The gang is so successful that its leadership is unknown to its victims. Ross Martin, the head of the cattlemen's protective association, goes to Captain McDowell of the Texas Rangers for help. McDowell, who has been stung by criticism surrounding his ineffectiveness in this matter, sends his best man, Brand Calhoun, to investigate the affair. As Brand leaves the Ranger station, he leaves behind the two women in his life: Patti McDowell, his captain's daughter, and Joan Rawlings, the local banker's daughter. Steve, Brand's younger brother, begs to join him on the assignment, and Brand allows him to ride along, despite his misgivings about Steve's inexperience. Along a wilderness road, Brand and Steve come across a group of bandits attempting to hold up a stagecoach. The two rangers ride to the rescue, and the bandits are chased off, but not before Steve is killed. Angered by his brother's death and tired of being the unprotected target of outlaws, Brand quits the Rangers and disappears into the wilderness. Martin then demands Captain McDowell's removal from his post and organizes a vigilante group, with himself in the lead. In actuality, Martin is the leader of the bandits and hopes his new post as head of the vigilantes will guarantee his safety. At the first meeting of the vigilantes, however, Brand arrives and boldly steals the money raised to finance the group. Over time, Brand commits more and more robberies until he is finally approached by the bandit gang to join their ranks. Brand agrees, but before he can join the group, he is ordered to prove himself by helping them rob Rawlings, the banker. Later, the gang rides into town to rob the bank itself, unaware that Brand has sent a warning to the townspeople. The outlaws are ambushed, but when one of the bandits escapes the townspeople, Brand follows him and discovers that Martin is the bandit leader. The two men fight, Martin is captured, and Brand admits to Patti and Joan that he became a bandit in order to discover their leader. In turn, Brand is granted forgiveness and is made the new captain of the Rangers.
