Synopsis
Ranchers Jimmy Wakely and Cannonball attend an anniversary party for Marshal Laramie Jordan, along with Larry, the marshal's son, who is courting mine-owner and speculator Belle Morgan. Unknown to Larry and the others, Belle is intimidating local miners into selling out to her. On her orders, henchman Kern causes an explosion in a mine, which kills the owner, Sawyer, who has refused to sell to Belle. After Jimmy and Cannonball leave town for a few days to visit friends, miner Harper asks the marshal to provide an escort for an ore shipment he is making. While Larry is scouting ahead of the ore wagon, Belle tricks him into helping her with a broken-down buggy, thereby setting up the marshal and Harper to be ambushed by her gang. The wagon driver is killed and the marshal seriously wounded, but Jimmy and Cannonball, who are riding nearby, rush to help. After the marshal asks Jimmy to find out what has happened to Larry, Cannonball takes him back to town in the wagon. When Jimmy and Harper find Larry, Harper angrily accuses him of failing in his duty. Marshal Jordan dies as a result of the ambush, and soon after, Harper tells Jimmy that the town council has chosen him to be the new marshal. Jimmy refuses on the grounds that the job has always been filled by a Jordan and should now go to Larry. Harper rejects Larry as undependable, while Belle, for her own reasons, argues that he should be given a chance. Jimmy offers to serve as Larry's deputy, but Larry will not agree to that and quits. Later, however, he changes his mind and agrees to assist Jimmy, but unwittingly reveals to Belle that he is to act as a decoy for the delivery of Harper's payroll while Jimmy is bringing it in by another route. Belle's gang, led by Burton, attack Jimmy and Cannonball and escape with the cash, but Jimmy trails Burton to town and arrests him after a fistfight. Belle then devises a plan to silence Burton and slips him a gun and a note, telling him to make a break that evening. At the appointed time, as Larry tries to persuade Belle to marry him, Burton tricks Cannonball into opening his cell, then slugs him. As planned, Burton escapes but Belle alerts Larry and he and Burton shoot it out. Larry kills Burton, thereby winning Harper's respect. When Jimmy arrives with a telegram that proves Burton has a lengthy criminal record, he is disappointed to learn that they will be unable to extract any information out of him. Jimmy, Cannonball and Larry try to figure out how Burton could have acquired the gun, and suspicion falls on Belle, but Larry defends her and gets into a fistfight with Jimmy. Later, however, when Jimmy discovers that the gun Belle gave to Burton was loaded with blanks, Larry realizes that Belle has set him up and tells her that he is leaving town for a while. Belle then orders Kern and another henchman, Strang, to leave town as she is aware that Jimmy is checking on them. Larry returns just as Belle is paying the men off but is overpowered by them and taken into the country where they intend to kill him. Jimmy and Cannonball, however, see the quartet leaving, follow them and foil their plan. Jimmy chases and shoots Kern, then goes after Larry and Belle, who are struggling for control of a runaway buggy. After Jimmy arrests Belle, he leaves Larry in charge as the new marshal, and he and Cannonball move on to their next adventure.
