Synopsis
Sherry Baker, a beautiful mathematics genius, uses her talents to formulate handicap tables for sports. Although she neither gambles nor bets, Sherry always picks the winners, and her office on Broadway in New York is constantly besieged by bookies. Sherry relies on her two assistants, Chris and Rosy, a former boxer, and has an combative relationship with her boyfriend, Ricky Sloan, the owner of the Panthers football team. One day, six-year-old Jimmy Carson wanders into Sherry's office to place a bet using money from his mother. Sherry is appalled that anyone would send a child to place a bet and sends him home, but Jimmy returns to her office when he is unable to rouse his sleeping mother. Rosy goes with Jimmy to his apartment and discovers that the mother has died. Because Jimmy is now an orphan, Rosy and Chris insist that Sherry take him home for safekeeping, despite her protests that she is not motherly. Sherry nevertheless quickly learns to love Jimmy, and enlists her lawyer's help in attempting to adopt the boy. Juvenile court investigators reject Sherry's application because of her unconventional profession, and Judge John Morse sends Jimmy to an orphanage. Sherry is so upset that she turns her business over to Chris and vows to become a normal housewife. When Ricky, who has also grown fond of Jimmy, applies to Morse to adopt the boy, Morse tells him that the odds are in his favor, except for the fact that he is single. Ricky and Sherry hurriedly marry and are then able to legally adopt Jimmy, who is delighted with his new parents. Their happiness is short-lived, however, as Sherry makes it clear that she married Ricky only so that she could adopt Jimmy. Ricky, who genuinely loves Sherry, leaves in a huff and Jimmy, who witnesses the fight, runs away. When Jimmy tries to close the small savings account that Ricky has opened for him, the bank teller telephones Ricky, who immediately takes Jimmy home. Ricky reassures the boy that Sherry is indeed in love with him, pointing out that she cried when he left the previous night. After the new family is reunited, Sherry proclaims her love for Ricky with a long kiss.
