Synopsis

When gangster Johnny "Pep" is shot outside New York City's Bohemia Club, Mark Hampton, an investigator in the district attorney's office, questions club owner and rival gangster Nickey Bowman. Nickey explains that he was leaving the club with the club's pianist, Beverly Brent, when he heard the shot. Later, Beverly's sweetheart, Steve London, says he suspects Nickey of the murder. Moll Francie White, meanwhile, tells Nickey of her plan to dump her sweetheart, gang member Sam Clarke, but Nickey convinces her to stay with him a bit longer. Just then, Hampton arrives with an injunction forcing Nickey to close the club. Later, acting on a tip phoned in by Francie, Hampton goes to the address where Sam is staying, and is shot. After Steve plants listening devices in Nickey's office at the club, he learns about Sam's plan to hijack the guarded truck carrying cash from the Hamilton Park Race Track. When Steve arrives at the club, he convinces two members of the gang to double-cross Nickey. As soon as the truck arrives at the Ace Loan Company, Sam kidnaps a guard named McCabe at gunpoint. The gang changes into the guards' uniforms and, after arriving at the track, begins loading the truck. Sam is killed during the heist, and Steve escapes with an bag containing $100,000 in cash. Later, Hampton questions Nickey again, and Francie arrives with the news about the botched robbery. Nickey's henchmen follow Steve to a hotel, where he tries unsuccessfully to open the bag. To hide the bag, Steve places it inside a second, larger bag, and goes to Beverly's house, where she lives with her father, a professor at Lakeview University. There, Steve distracts Beverly and then quickly switches the bag of money with Beverly's identical bag, which is full of sheet music. Even after Beverly and Steve disappear together, Hampton remains sure of Beverly's innocence. When Beverly, whose real name is Joan Grey, tells Steve that her bag has been stored in her father's attic, he phones Professor Grey pretending to be a theatrical agent named Franklin. When quizzed, Beverly tells Steve that she hid her identity to protect her father's career. When Nickey's men try to kidnap Steve, he escapes through the fire escape, only to be shot by waiting police. The next day, Beverly's name is published in the newspapers, and after Hampton's men discover her music- filled bag at Steve's apartment, she is placed in a women's prison. Inside the prison, Beverly meets Francie, who was arrested for drunk driving. Francie convinces Sadie, Beverly's roommate, to attempt an escape. Meanwhile, Professor Grey has filed a missing persons report on his daughter, and when Hampton sees a photo of the professor's daughter, he recognizes Beverly. Beverly then escapes and phones her father, instructing him to take the overnight bus and bring the bag to her. Next, she phones Hampton to tell him that her father will arrive at the bus station the following morning. Francie listens in on the bugged line and relays the information to Nickey. After Professor Grey arrives with the bag, Nickey and his henchman, Danny, grab it. They go to Nickey's hideout to open the bag, and are followed by Hampton. After the gang is arrested and the cash retrieved, Hampton and Beverly kiss.
