Synopsis

When ranch hand California's last remaining relative, Ben, is murdered, Hopalong Cassidy, foreman of the Bar-20 ranch, and Lucky Jenkins, a ranch hand, accompany their friend to lay claim to his gold mine. They are preceded by Trudy Pendleton, however, who was Ben's niece. Hoppy finds some cryptic instructions on locating the hidden mine, but he is ambushed and the note is stolen. Hoppy thinks that Ace Gibson, who has befriended Trudy, was responsible for the ambush because he was the only person who knew about Ben's note. Hoppy's suspicions are confirmed when Sheriff Blake informs him that Ace and his compatriot, Jud Carter, have been inquiring about the "eagle" mentioned in Ben's note. Ace convinces Trudy that Hoppy, California and Lucky are three outlaws and she throws them off the ranch. Hoppy figures out that the location of the mine is under Ben's woodshed, but when they go inside, Ace and his gang hold them hostage. Ace then holds Trudy hostage in his office to force her to sell him her claim. Hoppy, California and Lucky overwhelm their captors and Hoppy arrives in time to save Trudy from Ace. After a struggle, Ace and his gang are turned over to the sheriff. Trudy and California sell their mine and she returns to the Bar-20 Ranch with her new friends.
