Synopsis

"Doc" Carter loses his small town drugstore after a major corporation owned by Mr. Guilfoyle opens a discount store down the block. After Guilfoyle refuses to hire him, Doc's wife Ellen valiantly sacrifices her private savings that were to pay for an operation for their son Dickie, so that they can open another store with which to support their five children. That store fails, however, and Doc is forced to work in a factory. In the meantime, their friends, "Bill" and Gloria Hastings, who earned their fortune through the stock trade in Chicago, visit the Carters and are impressed by the warmth of the family. Unable to have children, Bill offers to adopt one of the Carters' children and thereby help support the family. Doc and Ellen are at first offended, and then struggle with the notion of giving up a child so that all might prosper. At the last moment, they decide against the proposition. When Gloria later finds out about Bill's offer, she chastises him for his clumsy gesture, but realizes it was made with good intentions. Still determined to help, Bill forces Guilfoyle to sell the drugstore to him so that he can hire Doc, and Gloria arranges for Dickie's operation, which is a success. With the Carter family restored to normalcy, the Hastings decide to adopt and start a family of their own.
