Synopsis

Constable O'Malley, a crack North West Mounted Policeman, is summoned by his superior officer, McGregor, as he is about to leave on vacation. McGregor and the commissioner tell O'Malley about a gang of thieves who hide in Canada after robbing American towns. Neither Canadian nor American police have been able to catch the gang, and McGregor assigns O'Malley to the case and tells him to report to the Wildhorse Lake outpost. Once there, however, O'Malley discovers that his contact, Alistaire Robinson, was shot the previous night, allegedly by young Bud Hyland, a member of the gang. O'Malley devises a plan to gain Bud's confidence and thereby infiltrate the gang, and so he soon joins Bud in his cell. O'Malley gives his name as Duke Kinnard and convinces Bud to join him in an escape attempt. They enlist the help of Bud's sister Edith, who disapproves of O'Malley but sticks with her brother, and after their escape, they go to the gang's hideout. Bud, who was only hired by the gang as a guide, convinces the leader, Red Jagger, to let them stay. Red agrees because he and the others are nervous about Bud and want to watch him. Red is skeptical of O'Malley, especially when O'Malley prevents him from making a move on Edith, but O'Malley bluffs his way out of trouble. The day after their arrival, Edith makes O'Malley promise to go straight, which he eagerly does in hopes of impressing her. Red tests O'Malley by ordering him to come with them across the border that night, which O'Malley does, and after he robs a gambling hall, he secretly gives the money to the local Mounties. The next day, Gabby, the cook, is unhappy that O'Malley is keeping all the money, and after telling the shocked Edith about O'Malley's nighttime activity, he incites the others to beat him up. Red arrives as they are about to begin and quickly disperses them. O'Malley tries to convince Red to rob a Canadian bank, and Red eventually falls for his taunting and agrees to the job. Later, when Bud and Edith try to leave, Red catches them and hits Bud, who falls and hurts his head. Bud and Edith are furious at O'Malley for not defending them and assume that he has become as bad as the rest of the gang. Later that night, Gabby tells O'Malley that Red killed Robinson and framed Bud, after which O'Malley attempts to leave to warn the Mounties about the next day's raid but is stopped by Red. Soon after, O'Malley is talking with Gabby in the kitchen when he sees Edith come into the other room. O'Malley loudly describes the raid in hopes Edith will sneak off and warn the Mounties, which she then does. The bank robbery is foiled, but Red escapes to the hideout, where he is about to kill Bud for informing when O'Malley appears and captures him. O'Malley is promoted to sergeant, is thanked by Bud and leaves on his vacation, which is now a honeymoon with Edith.
