Synopsis
After his father dies and leaves him a ranch in Oklahoma, Ken Rawlins decides to take on the upkeep of the ranch himself. Some time later, Ken and neighboring rancher Nugget Clark begin losing cattle to a rustler named Sanders and his partner, Jonathan Walpole. To help them in their fight against the thieves, Ken and Nugget send a telegram to Ken's childhood friend, Allan "Rocky" Lane, asking him to come to their aid. Soon after, however, the rustlers' leader, Sharkey, claims that Ken's father had cheated him, then pulls his gun and kills Ken. Later, at the Grass Valley Tribune , Nugget tells editor Oliver Budge, who secretly works for Sharkey, that Leslie Rawlins, Ken's second cousin and the new owner of the ranch, will soon arrive in town by stagecoach. Along the way, however, the coach is stopped by Sanders, who shoots the driver in the hand. Rocky arrives moments later, scaring Sanders and his men away, and explains to the driver that he has come to escort Leslie safely into town. When he realizes that Leslie is a woman, he decides to take her and her housekeeper and cook, Agatha Scragg, straight to the ranch. There, Rocky explains that as the town is expecting her to be a man, he will pose as "Leslie" so that she will be free from danger. At the same time, Leslie agrees to pretend that she is Agatha. Later, Rocky persuades Sharkey to lend Nugget some money to pay his creditors. After Oliver throws a rock through Rocky's window with a note attached asking him to go to Willow Creek Bridge, Rocky meets a man who claims to work for Sharkey. When Rocky finds a piece of paper noting different types of cattle brands, he realizes that the rustlers have been re-branding the ranchers' cattle. After Nugget and Rocky are attacked, Rocky's horse Black Jack leads Rocky to the rustlers' hiding place, but they escape. When Oliver then finds a package addressed to Miss Leslie Rawlins containing frilly garments, he guesses that "Agatha" is really Leslie. The next day, at his office at the Coldwater Opera House, Walpole offers Sanders $200 to impersonate George Henry Black, Leslie's uncle. Oliver then tells Agatha that Leslie's uncle, who is suffering from a twisted ankle, has arrived in town and is waiting to see her. Leslie goes to Sanders' shack as instructed, and Sanders takes her hostage. After Rocky chases the gunman who stole Leslie's carriage, he is knocked unconscious. Nugget finds him later, and helps him into town. There, Walpole accuses him of impersonating Leslie and the sheriff arrests him. When the sheriff asks to inspect Rocky's saddle bag, Nugget grabs his gun, giving Rocky a chance to escape. At the stage line stop, Rocky finds Sanders and apprehends him. After Walpole tells Nugget where Leslie is being held, Sanders and Oliver try to escape with Leslie in a stagecoach. Rocky sees the coach and jumps aboard to fight with Sanders. After grabbing her shoe and knocking Oliver over the head with the heel, Leslie is rescued by Rocky.
