Synopsis
Bob Conlon, an enterprising young police officer, is summoned to a bank robbery, but by the time he arrives, the gang's leader, along with his henchmen Ace Quinn and Frank, have escaped. Later Bob visits schoolteacher Helen Regan, with whom he is in love. Unfortunately for Bob, however, Helen refuses to become romantically entwined with any officer of the law because her policeman father, Lt. Dan Regan, was shot and permanently crippled while apprehending a criminal named Blake Standish. Convinced that she could never be a policeman's wife, Helen is dating Johnny Davis, the owner of the Davis Loan Company. Unknown to Helen, Johnny is in league with Ace and Frank, who are all taking orders from the imprisoned Standish. Standish, who has vowed revenge on Regan for capturing him, escapes from prison, and with Johnny's help, disguises himself as a doctor named Madison. Standish plans to pull one last big job, settle his score with Regan and then leave town. Targeting Fabian's jewelry store, Standish schedules the robbery for the night of the town's big masquerade ball, which he is to attend with Johnny and Helen, thinking that the ball will be his alibi. On the night of the ball, Helen arrives with Johnny and Standish, who are dressed as a fireman and General Lee, respectively. Meanwhile, Ace and Frank rob the store, but when a telephone in the store is accidentally knocked off its receiver, the operator hears the crooks' conversation and notifies the police. Bob and his partner, Bumps O'Neil, answer the call and pursue the gang's car as it speeds away. When Bob sees the thieves hurl a package into a parked cab, he stops to inspect the vehicle. Before Bob can reach the cab, however, Johnny, who has slipped out of the ball and is waiting inside the vehicle for the delivery of the package, recovers the jewels and returns to the dance. When Bob opens the door to the taxi, he finds it empty except for a button left behind by its previous occupant. Bob then proceeds to the ball, and when he notices a button missing from Johnny's costume, he accuses him of being involved in the robbery and arrests him. Furious, Helen goes to police headquarters and testifies to Capt. Hart that Johnny was with her all evening. The next day, Johnny is released and returns to his office. When Helen comes to visit Johnny there, she overhears his phone conversation with the gang and realizes that he is a criminal. After reporting the conversation to Capt. Hart, Helen returns home. The gang, meanwhile, readies to leave town, but Standish insists on stopping at the Regan house to settle his grudge with Regan. Standish and his gang take Helen and her father hostage just as Bob and Bumps arrive at the house. After a thrilling pursuit, Bob and Bumps apprehend the crooks and rescue Helen and her father. Helen, finally realizing that life with a police officer need not be fraught with peril, agrees to renew her romance with Bob.
