Synopsis

Crooked New York criminal attorney Clyde Corbin, who records business conversations on a dictaphone and uses the recordings to blackmail his clients, plans to steal Pop Everett's earnings from the sale of his Colorado silver mine. Pop's daughter Carol is engaged to Assistant District Attorney Jerry Bennett, whose boss assigns him to get Corbin on his next deal. Meanwhile, Pop, who has a weakness for gambling, cashes his $50,000 check and loses all his money at the dog races to Corbin's planted bookie. Corbin gets away with the money, but his henchman, Nick, has found out about Corbin's affair with his wife and is out to get him. Another crook, Chicago Looey, whom Corbin cheated, reveals Corbin's involvement in Pop's loss to Carol. Carol confronts Corbin, and when he struggles with her, she hits him with a paperweight. Afraid she has killed him, Carol flees. Nick arrives just after she leaves and shoots Corbin, but the whole confrontation has been recorded on Corbin's dictaphone. Carol is arrested for Corbin's murder because she was seen entering the building, but when Looey, who is also arrested, reveals that Corbin recorded his conversations, Jerry discovers Nick's guilt on the recording, and Carol is released. Pop is reimbursed and Jerry and Carol are together again.
