Synopsis

Baseball pitcher Tommy N. Thornton, better known as "Mr. Dynamite," has just led his St. Louis Robins into the World Series against Brooklyn. While sightseeing in the "Bagdad Way" section of Manhattan, Tommy is recognized by tomboy Joey and newsboy Skinnay. Joey convinces Tommy to play her sideshow attraction, a ball toss in which hitting the target throws beautiful Vicki Martin out of bed. After knocking her down a dozen times, Tommy tries to apologize to Vicki and ends up following her into the ventriloquist show of Valla. There, he sees her steal a notebook from a dead man, then saves her from being shot as she escapes. Tommy follows Vicki to her apartment, and as he tries to take her to the police, she is shot at once more. As a diversion, Tommy has Vicki scream, then the two sneak out the window, with Tommy leaving his inscribted watch behind. Newspaper headlines soon proclaim Tommy a murder suspect, and the two are forced to hide in the home of Joey and the Professor, a Russian astrologer. Vicki then admits that she is a Canadian secret agent for the British government and is searching for foreign saboteurs. Her contact, Granville, was the murdered man, and his notebook may contain the names of the spies. Realizing the book is still in Vicki's apartment, Joey pretends to be a delivery boy and recovers it. Unfortunately, most of the book's contents are lost when Joey is forced to hide in a rain bucket. Tommy and Vicki do uncover, however, a passage about "dancers" and "Achilles," and decide to retrace their steps and return to the ventriloquist show. As Tommy and Vicki search the sideshow, two spies arrive, discussing Achilles. Discovered, Tommy and Vicki narrowly escape with their lives, then are tricked by the spies into following them to a secluded mansion. There, they meet the woman of the house, a charming, elderly lady, who convinces them that they have gone to the wrong place. The old woman, however, is actually Achilles, the leader of the spies. Back in Bagdad Way, Tommy sees the old lady go into Valla's show, where Vicki is inside dressed as a missionary. The two discover that the spies use signals from one of Valla's dummies to communicate with their accomplices. Before they can go for the police, however, Tommy and Vicki are captured. Valla shoots a dagger at Vicki from another dummy, but Tommy pushes her out of the way, and their captor is killed instead. The police arrive in time to capture Achilles, while the Professor and Joey knock out the remaining saboteur, as he tries to escape. After winning the World Series, Tommy then pitches for Joey's old sandlot team, only to discover that she has quit playing baseball and now prefers to be called by her given name, "Abigail."
