Synopsis
Unemployed and divorced nightclub singer Kay Barrie is desperate to buy medicine for her four-year-old child Penelope, and begs passerby Blackie Denbo for the money. Blackie, a gambler and nighclub owner, takes an interest in Kay, and accompanies her home to meet Penny, then pays for Penny's hospital bills. Penny recovers, and Blackie's luck changes for the better after placing bets on her age. Thereafter, Blackie supports Kay and Penny, kindly providing them with an apartment, clothes, and a nightclub job for Kay. Penny's eccentric grandfather Long leaves her millions of dollars, which enrages her father, Vinny Long. With the help of his lawyer Stuart Kirkland, Vinny files suit to prove that Kay is an unfit mother, so he can take custody of the child and her inheritance. Vinny's perjuring witnesses successfully convince Judge Clark that he should award him custody. Kay reluctantly hands over her daughter, who does not want to leave her mother. Kay's attorney appeals the case. To prevent the appeal, Vinny allows Kay to visit Penny, and seduces her into believing they will remarry. Blackie, who is in love with Kay, is angered by Vinny's deception and attempts to contact the judge, but the judge refuses to see him. He finally kidnaps Judge Clark, and proves to him that Vinny's witnesses lied on the stand by getting them to confess within earshot of the judge. Blackie swears he will submit to arrest for kidnapping the judge, but the judge acknowledges Blackie's good intentions and refrains from arresting him. Judge Clark reopens the case and charges Vinny and his attorney with conspiring to obstruct justice. They are arrested, and Penny is returned to her mother.
