Synopsis
Keeping a promise to his friend Colonel Hay, rancher and shady character Lex Crane turns over his son Ted to the law, hoping that the boy will get a fair trial for the murder of his friend Tom, a crime he did not commit. While the rangers are taking the boy to town, though, he is shot and killed from afar by Bert, a cohort of Buck Crane, Lex's brother. A reign of terror begins in the local communities, and people think that Lex and his men are responsible. Ranger Jack Hale and his friend Snappy are called in to apprehend Lex and manage to infiltrate Lex's gang with the unwitting help of Madge Crane, Lex's daughter, who thinks that Jack has been wounded after being pursued by the rangers. Jack learns that Tom had been murdered because of something he discovered in the underground caves on the Crane ranch. After Lex tells Jack that his brother Buck wants the ranch, Jack decides to help him. Jack knows for certain that Lex is innocent, after crimes occur when Lex and his men could not have been present, but when Jack's real identity is discovered, Lex's men want to kill him and Snappy. Lex intervenes, however, and Jack decides to "arrest" Lex for his own protection. Jack soon learns that Buck is really after oil that has been found on Lex's land and that he committed the crimes to lead to Lex's execution and Buck's inheritance of the ranch. He then arranges for Lex to sell the ranch to him, on paper only. Jack is then kidnapped by Buck's men and tells Buck that proof of his crimes is at the ranger's station, then Buck and the gang leave to dynamite the evidence. After escaping, Jack arrives at the station in time to catch Buck, prevent the dynamiting and prove the innocence of Lex and his men, who have been newly deputized to help. After Buck's arrest and Lex's release, Jack and Madge are now free to pursue a romantic relationship.

Variety and Film Daily both list Howard Dillinger as the editor. Copyright records and Variety give the surname of the family played by Long, Reynolds and Sharpe as Ransom, rather than Crane, which is listed on screen and spoken several times throughout the film. A Hollywood Reporter production chart from May 23, 1938 also lists Jim Sheridan in the film, but his appearance in the released version of the film is unconfirmed. Portions of the film were shot at Lone Pine, CA. Motion Picture Herald noted that Monogram Pictures had recently claimed that star Jack Randall was receiving an average of over one thousand fan letters each week. Modern sources include Sherry Tansey, Denver Dixon, Tex Palmer, Budd Buster and Chick Hannon in the cast.
