Synopsis
After living in England since the outbreak of World War II, Joe Newman returns to the small Bavarian town of his birth to seek news of his father. There he is told that his father, now dead, had escaped from behind the Iron Curtain, taken refuge in the home of a Dr. von Brecht, and later married a woman named Lisa. The evasive attitude of all those involved, including Police Inspector Hofmeister and insurance agent Brenner, leads Joe to believe that certain facts about his father are being kept secret. He breaks into von Brecht's home and finds an old man in the attic but is clubbed from behind before he can learn the stranger's identity. When he regains consciousness, Joe sees the old man being driven away by von Brecht, Brenner, and Lisa. Joe follows them to a railway station and discovers that the man is a renowned scientist who was forced to switch places with his father just before his death. Following a battle with Brenner, Joe rescues the scientist from being abducted to the East and helps him get out of the country.
