Synopsis

Federal court judge Jonas Stone arrives in the frontier town of Tularosa to try Manuel Álvarez, a young Mexican storekeeper accused of murdering the brother of Ben Matthews, the local land baron. The rancher has so dominated the weak-willed sheriff that Stone is left to investigate the case on his own. Despite Ben Matthews' attempts to prevent a fair trial, and the eagerness of another brother, Will, to lynch Álvarez, Stone interrogates the "witnesses" until he finally forces a confession from the defendant's mother-in-law, Señora Dona Vega. The deranged woman had hoped to see Álvarez convicted and lynched, thereby leaving her daughter, Alicia, free to marry Matthews and regain the lands he had taken from the Vega family. Following the trial, Matthews storms from the courthouse and challenges the judge to a gun-battle. The sheriff, who has regained his courage, tries to intervene, and Matthews kills him. Aided by a young gunslinger, Reb Gilroy, Stone tricks Matthews and then arrests him for the sheriff's murder. With law and order restored, the judge leaves Tularosa to continue his circuit.
