Synopsis
The celebration of the renewal of Texas cattle trade in Paso Grande following the end of the Civil War is interrupted by the news that the first wagon train carrying the proceeds of the sale has been attacked by guerillas. John Coe, the head of the Texas Rangers, leads a posse to the scene, and finds that all of his Rangers except for one have been killed in the raid. Angered, Coe sends a request to Austin for a full company of Rangers. Soon afterward, Pat Barrett visits Coe, his old friend, and tells him that he is now working as a United States Marshal and is on the trail of the guerillas. Posing as outlaw Bob Cantrell, Pat is invited to join the gang by Buck Barry, their leader. Buck takes Pat to their hideout, a ranch owned by Dad Crittenden and his daughter Virginia, who are being held prisoners. When Virginia becomes annoyed by the unwelcome attentions of Pete Pike, one of Buck's men, Pat gives the bully a beating. In revenge, Pike follows Pat to town, sees him enter the Rangers' office, and hurries back to expose him to the gang. Pat, aware that he is being watched, holds up the saloon and returns with the loot to allay the gang's suspicions. Meanwhile, Coe's request for reinforcements has been intercepted by Eph Brown, a member of the gang who is working at the Rangers' office. Buck instructs Eph to recruit outlaws to pose as Rangers, and confides his ruse to Pat, while also naming Bill Ruphy, a respected cattle dealer, as the real head of the gang. Pat informs Coe that his new Rangers are really Buck's men, and after arresting the outlaws, they round up the cowhands from the range and force Ruphy to ride with them. Seeing Ruphy, Buck realizes he has been double-crossed and shoots him. As the volunteers overpower Buck and his gang, Crittenden and his daughter are freed from the bonds of the outlaws, thus restoring law and order to the town of Paso Grande.
