Synopsis
Jimmy Wakely and his pal "Cannonball" go into town to consult with the Red Rock Land and Development Company about an offer on their homestead. After Jimmy comes to the aid of Curly Blake, who is involved in a fight over a girl, Curly warns them that the company is crooked. Curly is the nephew and heir of wealthy rancher Jed Gordon, who is meeting with ex-judge Steele, the president of Red Rock. Steele intends to build a dam above Green Valley and wants to acquire Jed's land. Jed tells him that Curly does not approve of the scheme and refuses to sell. After Jed leaves, Steele tells his associate, Donald Martin, that Curly is wild and reckless and has a weakness for gambling. Steele then sets Curly up in a crooked poker game with henchmen Carter and Blaine. Blaine accuses Curly of cheating and a brawl breaks out. Believing Curly to be guilty of the charge, Jed disowns him and decides to accept Steele's offer. A short time later, however, Jed sees Blaine and Carter go into Steele's office to pick up their pay, follows them and overhears them discussing their frame-up of Curly. When Jed tells Steele that he is going to see the sheriff, Steele kills him with Blaine's gun, then throws suspicion on Curly as the murderer. After the sheriff finds Jed's body in the wagon Curly is driving, Curly escapes on horseback and Jimmy and Cannonball hide him. Blaine and Carter intend to blackmail Steele over Jed's death, but he reminds them that it was Blaine's gun that did the killing and he has kept it. Steele asks Martin to pick up his fiancée, Rita Caldwell, and drive her home, but Blaine and Carter, figuring that they can trade her for the gun, attempt to kidnap her. However, Jimmy interrupts the kidnapping and chases after them, killing Blaine and wounding Carter. Unsuspecting, Jimmy and Rita, Curly's former sweetheart, seek Steele's help in clearing Curly. Carter, meanwhile, finds Martin and demands $500 from him to leave town, but Jimmy later captures him. Against Jimmy's wishes, Curly leaves his hideout and rides into town to tell Rita that he is innocent. She reassures him, but they are discovered by Steele, who suggests that Curly surrender to him and he will do all he can to prove his innocence. However, Jimmy shows up and tells Curly that Cannonball is holding Carter prisoner and if he talks, Curly can be cleared. Curly, therefore, declines Steele's offer. After Steele learns where Carter is being held, he helps him to escape, then kills him. The sheriff, Jimmy and Cannonball find Carter's body, but just as the sheriff is about to arrest them for the murder, Curly, who has been hiding nearby, intercedes. Jimmy then suggests a plan to the sheriff whereby they can clear Curly. Back in town, Steele sees the sheriff bring Curly in and the sheriff tells him that Carter is still alive and is on his way to the hospital in a wagon. When Steele, Martin and a henchman attack the wagon, they ride into an ambush prepared by Jimmy, who chases and captures Steele. Later, Curly and Rita marry.
