Synopsis
In Gateway Valley, Nash is busy driving homesteaders off their rightful property so that he may gain the water rights for the valley. As Nash plans to build a dam and reservoir on the property, he murders Baldwin, a land owner who stands in the way of his plans. The local newspaper owner, Polk, his daughter Evelyn and assistant Zeke, oppose Nash and threaten to expose him if they find proof. Ranger Bob Allen and his partner, Wally Hood, arrive to investigate Nash, and they pretend to stake a claim on land that Nash wants. Because the land registrar is away, Bob and Wally visit the newspaper office, where the Polks take an immediate liking to the men and invite them to dinner. Nash becomes friendly with Bob and suggests that he file a claim on Baldwin's property. The Polks assume that Bob is in league with Nash, and Zeke suggests that they send for some rangers. The next morning, Evelyn is trailed by two of Nash's henchmen, who wish to prevent her from going to the rangers, but Bob is able to rescue her before the two men can harm her. After Bob tells Evelyn his and Wally's true identities, he goes to Oreville to put his claim on Baldwin's land. In Oreville, after Bob sees Nash, who is also attempting to put a claim on the Baldwin property, he hurries back to Gateway Valley to confirm his priority to the claim. On the way, Bob escapes an ambush and learns that Wally was run off the land. Nash returns to claim possession of the land, but Evelyn comes forward to say that Wally was forced from the property. As Nash and his men engage Bob in a shootout, Bob and Evelyn take cover in a nearby cabin. Meanwhile, Wally returns with a company of rangers, who arrest Nash and his gang, leaving Bob and Evelyn alone in the cabin.
