Synopsis
While en route to the town of Medicine Flats, a sharpshooter named Johnny rescues an old prospector named Bodie from ambush by a gang of outlaws, who are about to steal his claim. The gang is led by the owner of the Golden Spur Saloon, Kansas City Kate, who has been cheating the local prospectors out of their profits at her gambling tables. Kate's victims include Johnny's friend, Henry Blake, who was killed by a bullet in his back, and the town's marshal. Although Bodie encourages Johnny to become the new marshal, Johnny decides to exact his own form of justice. In the saloon, Johnny engages in a fistfight with Kate's henchman Cameo, and is saved from Cameo's bullet by an alert saloon singer named Donna. Bodie, meanwhile, eavesdrops on Kate by hiding in a crawl space beneath her office, and passes on information to Johnny. Alhough Kate orders one of her men, Clem, to tail Johnny, he eludes Clem and holds up a surrey carrying Kate's ill-gotten profits. Johnny then provides bait for an ambush by instructing a townsman named Hank to boast in the saloon that he has struck gold. When Kate's men try to ambush Hank, Johnny shoots one of them and scares off the rest. Johnny's successes against Kate cause her to offer him a job. After he refuses Kate's offer, she retains The Cherokee Kid, a hired killer, to murder Johnny. Donna once again warns him, however, and in the saloon, Johnny outdraws Cherokee and orders him to leave town. Next, Kate tries to kill Johnny by placing dynamite in a strongbox that is supposedly carrying a large shipment of money. When Cameo, acting as bait for Johnny, transports the box, Johnny ambushes him, fakes an explosion, and returns the box to Kate intact. Later, gang member Yuma discovers Bodie's hiding place in the saloon and shoots him in the back before fleeing to Smokey Forks. After Johnny finds out that Bodie was wounded, he hunts down Yuma and kills him. Meanwhile, Donna searches Kate's office and is interrupted by Cameo, who is determined to rob Kate and flee town. Cameo is caught by Kate, however, who reminds him of his complicity in the murder of Henry Blake. Donna then emerges and identifies herself as Blake's daughter before holding them up. After Kate blames Cameo for the murder, he locks the women in a closet. Cherokee and his gunmen, meanwhile, have lined up outside the saloon. When Cherokee draws, Johnny shoots him, and a gunfight ensues. As the outlaws flee, Johnny clears the saloon and beats Cameo in a fight. After Donna reveals herself to Johnny as Blake's daughter and shows him her father's claim, he arrests Cameo and Kate for murder. Although Bodie urges Johnny to stay in town and enjoy a party given in his honor, he rides out of town alone.
