Synopsis
Engineer Owen Merrill travels to the Pacific Northwest where he plans to build a dam. He stays at the Salmon Club, run by attractive Heather McHale. When Heather learns Owen's purpose, she explains that the club has a government lease on the river in order to preserve the area's good salmon fishing. Owen argues that the dam will create jobs, but Heather deplores the loss of beauty. The next day, with the help of Doug McKenzie, another guest at the lodge who is in love with Heather, she pretends that no canoes are available to take Owen to the dam site. Instead, she takes him to watch the fish swim upstream. When, despite her efforts, Owen leaves to begin work, Heather enlists the help of the members of the club, who are all powerful men, and Owen soon receives a wire ordering him to suspend work on the dam. Heather takes photographs of the men working, claiming they are in violation of her lease. Both Owen and Heather visit the Commissioner of Forestry, who grants a temporary extension of Owen's agreement. Heather's guides destroy a bridge that Owen's men have built, ruining a truck, but work on the dam continues despite all their efforts. When Heather visits the commissioner in one last attempt to prevent the dam, he shows her Owen's design for a fish ladder, which will allow the salmon to continue their course upstream. Finally reconciled, Heather accepts Owen's proposal of marriage.
