Synopsis
In the writing room of a Los Angeles department store, shopper Dorian Westmore, feeling a slight headache, accepts an aspirin tablet from Inez Marie Polk, a complete stranger. Dorian does not take the aspirin, however, and later gives the pill to her wealthy uncle. Her uncle dies, and an autopsy reveals that he was poisoned. Inez reads about the death and realizes that the deadly aspirin, which had been given to her by one of her blackmail victims, was meant for her. Panic-stricken, Inez tells her boyfriend, Bill Redding, that she has to go into hiding. Unable to identify or locate Inez, Dorian, meanwhile, is tried and convicted of her uncle's murder. After her trial, Dorian's fiancé, David Kane, who has been working at a remote logging camp, informs her lawyer, Oliver T. Vickers, that he is going to prove her innocence. David begins searching for Inez by tracking down the writing room maid, Anna Nelson, whose confidence he quickly gains. Just as the maid is about to reveal Inez's whereabouts, however, David is knocked out by an unseen attacker. When David comes to, police inspector Brady informs him that Anna has been killed. After Garry, a newspaper reporter, announces that he has located Inez, he and David rush to her apartment, but learn that she has just moved out. Vickers has followed them and, while hidden, takes a shot at David, but misses. Later, David visits Dorian in jail and learns that she has received an anonymous letter from someone who says that he can produce Inez. As instructed in the letter, David goes to a mountain cabin, where he is attacked by two thugs, but outwits them and learns that Vickers hired them to kill him. Redding then receives a telegram, supposedly sent by Inez, asking him to come see her. When he arrives at Inez's apartment, however, Inez realizes that they have been set up. Vickers, who has followed Redding, demands that Inez hand over the incriminating evidence with which she has been blackmailing him. A struggle ensues, during which Vickers slugs Inez. Redding's bookie, meanwhile, has told David where he has gone, and as soon as David arrives at the building, he and Redding become involved in a brawl. Brady and another officer, who happen to be driving nearby, are sent to check on the fight. Having knocked out Redding, David races to Inez's apartment and prevents Vickers from escaping, just as the police show up. Inez clears Dorian by telling Brady that Vickers planted the poisoned aspirin tablet on her. Brady promises to arrange for Dorian's immediate release, after which she happily reunites with her fiancé in the mountains.
