Synopsis

New York gold diggers Peggy, Dot and Sally Lou live off of the earnings of their roommate Jeannie, a nightclub singer. One night Jeannie meets Bill Langhorne, who plans to take her out but loses her phone number, and is unable to find her because she loses her job at the club. Jeannie's roommates draw up a contract in which they agree to split their earnings, although the three have no intention of working. They induce Jeannie to sign because she believes that it is a joke. The four girls are forced to take work as hostesses at Madame Fifi's speakeasy, where Bill reunites with Jeannie. After their first date, Jeannie takes home Bill's cat for companionship. One night at her apartment, Bill leaves Jeannie a diamond bracelet around the neck of his cat, although she previously refused to accept it. Peggy, Dot and Sally Lou steal the bracelet and hock it for four hundred dollars. Jeannie finds out and gets the bracelet back, intending to return it to Bill at the speakeasy. Sally Lou connives to get Bill to take her out, and when they appear together at the speakeasy, Jeannie angrily returns the bracelet and leaves, but Bill catches up with her and proposes. Jeannie accepts, however, some time later Bill finds the roommates' agreement, and refusing to believe that it was in jest, angrily leaves Jeannie. Jeannie moves out and the other girls disband after an argument. Joey, a former radio announcer, reunites the roommates in a performance at a beer garden where Jeannie learns that Bill is engaged. Sally Lou tells Bill the agreement was a joke but Bill is jealous of Van Dyne, an elderly suitor of Jeannie, and insists she return his cat. Jeannie accepts Van Dyne's proposal and he takes her to Bill's apartment to return the pet. Bill and Jeannie initially argue, but they relent and make up, and Bill sends Van Dyne away.

Notes

Universal story information is inconclusive as to whether the film is based on a play or on part or all of the above individual stories. The working titles of the film were Lilies of Broadway, Park Avenue Ladies and Four Wise Girls. Variety mistakenly calls the film Ladies Must Live. Although Motion Picture Herald gives music credit to Harry Sauber, this has not been confirmed by other sources.
