Synopsis

Four of the five gold mines near Bannock City produce large quantities of high-grade ore, but the fifth, which is owned by Jud Parker, is a dummy. Parker instead has his men rob the Wells Fargo shipments of the other miners' gold, then repacks and sells it as coming from his own mine. Local attempts to stop the mysterious robberies have been thwarted by Sheriff Ed King, who has reluctantly joined Parker because he needs money to care for his sick wife Helen. After losing several heavily insured shipments, Wells Fargo asks U.S. Marshal Jim Randall to conduct an undercover investigation. As Jim approaches Bannock City, he sees Parker's men attacking an ore wagon. Jim prevents the robbery and the culprits scatter, but because he is found with the driver's dead body, Jim is arrested. King's sister Martha, the publisher of the local newspaper, interviews Jim in his cell, and his arrogance causes her to write a scathing article denouncing him as a bandit. Martha apologizes, however, when Wells Fargo agent Cal Chambers, who knows about Jim's mission, vouches for him, saying that he is a geologist friend. While Jim begins romancing Martha, he continues his investigation. Parker, who distrusts Jim, frequently goads him into fighting, but the marshal always wins. Jim in turn grows suspicious of Parker and, during a nocturnal visit, discovers that his mine is a phony. Jim confides in Cal and mine owner Lon Graham his belief that Parker is the gang's leader, and the men devise a trap. They arrange for a shipment of Graham's ore to be unprotected and easy to steal. Once the gold is taken and Parker attempts to pass it off as his own, Jim intends to catch him by demanding to see what part of his mine produced the ore. Parker becomes wise to the scheme, however, and after stealing Graham's gold, replaces it with his own low-grade ore. Upon examinging the shipment, Graham believes that Jim has swindled him, and starts a brawl. During the mêlée, Parker kills Graham, and Jim is blamed. Jim asserts that he is a marshal, but his claim cannot be substantiated when it is discovered that Cal has also been murdered. A lynch mob is about to hang Jim when Martha arrives with Jim's credentials, which Cal had previously given to her. Realizing that he is about to be taken into custody, Parker tries to flee but is pursued by Jim, a posse and King, who has renounced his former partner. Jim and his men round up the gang, but King is mortally wounded. Jim takes King home, where he dies peacefully after Jim and Martha promise never to reveal the truth about his wrongdoing to Helen. Soon after, Jim and Martha bid farewell to Helen, who is returning to the East, and prepare to begin a new life together.
