Synopsis
Sharecroppers Abner, Cicero, Elviry and Violey Weaver decide to appeal to their landlord, Mr. Pittman, to improve the lot of his tenants. Pittman, who is afflicted with ill health, a frivolous wife, a playboy son and growing financial losses, seizes the opportunity to sign his estate over to his backwoods clients and disappear. The Weavers then move into the Pittman mansion, joining Junior Pittman's French dancing girls, while Abner meets with Pittman's business partners. After Abner fends off the partners' demands for money, they set Pittman's creditors on him, but Elviry raises the money to pay them off by auctioning Mrs. Pittman's furs at a charity fashion show. When Abner accuses the partners of cheating Pittman, they retaliate by accusing Abner of murdering Pittman. Fleeing from the police, the Weavers return to their farm, where they find a contented Pittman. After Pittman refuses to go home to confront his problems, Abner assures him that his problems are all solved, and to prove it, convinces him to play dead. Pittman's grieving "widow" then approaches his death bed and pledges her love, while his remorseful son Junior proclaims that he regrets not entering his father's business and settling down with Mary, Pittman's secretary. After his partners confess to cheating him, Pittman rises from his death bed and relieves the burden of the sharecroppers.
