Hostile Country

59m 1950

Brief Synopsis

The first of a series of six westerns produced by Ron Ormond for Lippert distribution starring two ex-Hopalong Cassidy sidekicks, which means it also is the first one in the series that was a direct swipe from one of A. H. Hackel's mid-30's Supreme westerns - in this case 1935's "No Man's Range" with Bob Steele - in which Ron Ormond and Maurice Tombragel never looked back while giving themselves an "original" writing credit. Shamrock (Jimmy Ellison) is summoned to the ranch of his stepfather Henry Oliver (George Chesebro) whom he has never met. He still hasn't met him when he gets there because Knowlton (George J. Lewis) shows up posing as Oliver. Lucky Hayden (Russell Hayden) is along as Shamrock's sidekick or, to be more specific, the role played by whisker-faced Buck Connor in the original.

Synopsis

While riding through an isolated stretch of ranch country, foreman Deacon Hall and a ranch hand are surprised to discover that the pass through which they usually bring their stock has been boarded up by rancher Henry Oliver, who recently arrived in the area. While Deacon is reporting this news to his employer, rancher Ann Green, cowboys Shamrock Ellison and Lucky Hayden ride into the area. Shamrock has a letter from his stepfather, Oliver, whom he has never met, offering him his late mother's share in his ranch. They are stopped by Ann's men, and when Shamrock tells Ann that they are looking for work, Ann asks her friend, Colonel Pat Higgins, to give Shamrock and Lucky jobs on his ranch. Meanwhile, Oliver's men are visited by Tom and Ed Brady, who request additional gunslingers to help them guard the pass. Just then, Shamrock and Lucky arrive at Oliver's ranch and are ordered away at gunpoint. Shamrock and Lucky then ride into town and stop at the saloon, and when a man asks to join Shamrock's poker game, the bartender identifies him as Oliver. Oliver is caught cheating and pulls a gun on Shamrock, but Lucky shoots and kills him, and the two friends escape. Because Shamrock and Lucky are later seen riding in the company of the Brady boys, the sheriff and his posse search the Brady ranch for them but find nothing. As soon as the posse leaves, Tom brings Shamrock and Lucky up from the cellar and searches them, finding the letter from Oliver. Ed says a jury would never believe that Oliver's shooting was self-defense after seeing this letter, and Shamrock pretends to agree to join the Brady gang. The next day, at the sheriff's office, Lane, a government agent who is interested in buying Ann's horses, says immediately head back East with the horses. Ann, Deacon and the colonel try to tear down the barricade, but Brady's men stop them, and during the ensuing gunfight, Shamrock and Lucky ride up and order Brady's men to stop shooting. After Shamrock heads off to Oliver's land, Lucky tells Ann that Oliver was his friend's stepfather. Deacon knocks Lucky out and sends for the sheriff, but when they are back at Ann's ranch, she looks the other way as Lucky escapes. Meanwhile, Shamrock searches Oliver's ranch, and he is about to leave when a noise alerts him to a hidden passage to the cellar, where he finds an old man who claims to be Oliver. He says a man named Knowlton must have been using his name and explains that the Brady gang kidnapped him before he ever reached town, so none of the townspeople know what he looks like. The Brady boys are waiting for them when they emerge from the cellar, and Ed says he has forged a will from Oliver that leaves everything to him. Shamrock and Oliver are being forced to dig their own graves when Lucky shows up and rescues them. After dynamiting the barricade, Shamrock and Lucky keep the Brady gang at bay while Ann's herd is driven through, then help the sheriff and his posse capture the outlaws. In town, Shamrock hands Ann a check from Lane, and he and Lucky argue over which one of them should marry her.
