Synopsis

When Baron Frankenstein refuses to send his son Victor to Vienna University, the young man arranges for his father's death, thereby inheriting his title, castle, fortune, and housekeeper-mistress Alys. Tiring of his studies, however, Victor returns home with his best friend Wilhem and sets out to construct a human being from parts supplied by a grave robber and his wife. When Wilhem objects to the ghoulish experiments, Victor electrocutes him and immerses the corpse in a vat filled with acid. To complete his creation, Victor murders a neighboring professor. Afterwards, he offers refuge to the victim's daughter, Elizabeth, who has loved him since childhood. His creation nearly ruined when the grave robber drops the professor's brain, Victor hurls the clumsy thief into the acid tank. A bolt of lightning from an electrical storm galvanizes the man-made being into life. Not recognizing its creator, the monster knocks Victor unconscious, escapes into the woods, and terrorizes the countryside until it is recaptured by Victor. Threatened with exposure by Alys (who is jealous of Elizabeth's presence in the castle) and by the grave robber's wife (who is searching for her missing husband), Victor uses the monster to kill the two women. Investigating the mysterious deaths and disappearances, the police arrive accompanied by a little girl, whom the monster menaced in the forest. Victor, who has hidden the creature in the empty vat, looks on in both anger and relief as the child unwittingly releases the containers that flood the tank with acid. With both his creature and the evidence of his crimes eradicated, Victor is free to continue his experiments.
