Synopsis
Singing sheriff Bob Barrett is called away from the rodeo to apprehend a gang of cattle rustlers led by Heck Claiborne. As the law closes in on the gang, Bob's deputy, Tom Morrison, is shot and badly wounded by Luke Grimes, one of the rustlers. Luke escapes with his pals, one of whom is Russ Whitely, Bob's best friend. Although suspicious of Russ's involvement with the rustlers, Bob will not arrest him without proof. Bob's concern about Russ is echoed by Diane Allen, the object of both men's affections. When Bob refuses to shoot Heck down in cold blood, Len Walker, a leader of the community, insinuates that his friendship with Russ is affecting his job. The situation becomes more tense with the arrival of Bat Morrison, the brother of the wounded deputy, who demands that Bob arrest Tom's assailant. Bob appoints Bat deputy, and soon afterward, Tom dies, accusing Luke of his shooting. Bob, Bat and Walker are in the act of arresting Luke when Bat shoots him in cold blood. When Claiborne swears vengeance against Bob for Luke's death, Russ tells Diane to warn Bob, and Diane finally realizes that Russ is involved with the rustlers. Meanwhile, Bob finds proof of Russ's outlaw activities, but rather than arrest his friend, he resigns and Bat takes over. Discovering that Bat knows of Russ's guilt, Bob rides to warn his friend to leave the country, and he is trailed by the suspicious Bat. After Claiborne's gang sights Bob, a wild pursuit occurs in which Bob, Bat and Russ are cornered. In a blazing gunfight, Russ is killed by a rustler's bullet. Bob's ammunition is exhausted just as a posse led by Walker and Diane rides to the rescue. With the gang apprehended, Bob and Diane are reconciled.
