Synopsis
Author Dick Spencer Gordon is at an autograph party when Frederick, one of his creditors, points out that another one of Dick's checks has bounced. Dick asks his publisher, Randall, for an advance on his next book, to be titled Gulliver's Travels , an account of a forthcoming trek across America. Randall refuses and bets Dick $20,000 that he cannot travel across the country to San Francisco in six months, concealing his identity, taking no money and writing the book along the way. When Dick reaches California, he has written nothing and has only two weeks remaining in which to win the wager. During a storm, he takes refuge in a deserted cabin at the "Half Moon Lodge," but soon discovers that he is sharing it with a girl named Judy and her twin kid sisters. They are suspicious that Dick has been sent by the miserly grandfather whom they are fleeing. That same night, Sheriff Jasper Pinkham drops off Henry Townsend, owner of the cabin, and two thugs, cohorts of escaped convict Slug Gorman, show up in order to search for Slug's hidden loot, but flee the cabin when a policeman arrives looking for Judy and the twins. By diverting the police, Dick wins Judy's confidence, and they decide to make themselves indispensable to Henry so that they can continue living at the lodge. Dick and Henry open the lodge as a hotel, but when no customers show up, they decide change the name of the lodge to "Honeymoon, Ltd." in order to lure a new clientele. Dick receives a letter revealing that Judy and the twins, who call Dick "Dr. Fix-it," are in fact Randall's granddaughters. Slug and fellow escaped convict Babe Dawes, who pose as Southerners Sugar and Molly Carver, stop at the lodge after blowing a tire on some tacks that the twins had sprinkled on the road. Dick finishes Gulliver's Travels , then wires Randall, who is upset by the news, especially when he discovers that his grandchildren, whom he believed were incapable of living on their own, like Dick. Meanwhile, Slug finds the money hidden in the fireplace, but Pinkham arrests Dick and Henry, believing that they are the criminals. The twins save the day, however, when they expose Slug and Babe after observing them escaping, then returning dressed as detectives. Following the capture of Slug and Babe, Dick drives Judy to San Francisco, after reassuring the twins that he will soon fix everything.
