Synopsis

As new recruits to the U. S. Navy, known as plebes, Tommy Gorham and James "Stuffy" Miller are constantly ribbed by the upperclassmen. Tommy does not like the rigorous discipline of Navy training, and after being humiliated by Chuck Baldwin and picking up the nickname "Beautiful," bets Stuffy that he will go to the graduation ball with Chuck's girl friend, Judy Holland, the proprietor of the Anchor Tea Room . Judy likes Tommy, despite the fact that he is impertinent and conceited, and she is pleased when he becomes the star quarterback of the plebe football team. On Judy's birthday, Tommy convinces Stuffy to allow him to deliver Chuck's birthday gift, as Chuck is unable to visit her because he is on duty. That night, Judy promises to go to the ball with Tommy, but Chuck reports him when he sneaks into his quarters after "lights out," and prevents him from playing in an important game. Navy loses the game, and Tommy loses the respect of both his friends and Judy, who attends the ball with Chuck after having found out about the wager. Judy disbelieves Tommy when he professes his love for her and refuses to see him, but is miserable. The next season, Tommy and Stuffy become upperclassmen, and Tommy is slated to be Chuck's substitute in the big game. Judy proves that she loves Tommy when she purposely detains Chuck after hours one night, so that he will be suspended and Tommy can play for him. Chuck is nearly caught by the night guard, however Tommy covers for him by jumping over the wall and pretending to be drunk, thereby distracting the guard from Chuck. Tommy is suspended from playing the game but listens to the radio broadcast while on guard duty. He is thrilled to hear Chuck dedicating the winning play to him. After Judy finds out about Tommy's sacrifice, she makes up with him.
