Synopsis
Dan Lawson pays off the mortgage to his Lazy D Ranch at the bank and leaves on his horse. When bank owner Brad Eason runs from the bank claiming he has just been robbed, Sheriff Bob Higgins and his friend, Sundown Adsel, chase Dan, thinking he is the thief. When Dan stops to check his horse, he is shot and his wallet is robbed of the deed to his ranch and stuffed with money to implicate him in the robbery. Bob arrives on the scene and shoots, then finds Dan's dead body and, blaming himself for the killing, turns in his badge. Eason, who shot Dan, orders his accomplice, Steve Yates, to keep quiet and go to work at the Lazy D. Despondent, Bob roams the hills for a month, then stops at the camp of his Indian friend, Red Eagle. Sundown, who has been working at the Lazy D, asks Bob to welcome Dan's son Jackie, who is arriving from the East. En route, Bob saves a runaway stage, which happens to be carrying Jackie, who turns out to be a woman. She shows Bob a letter she received from Eason offering to buy the Lazy D to cover an outstanding $10,000 note supposedly owed by Dan that is due immediately. When Bob and Sundown investigate the scene of Dan's murder, they find a ten-dollar gold piece and track it to Yates. Bob, meanwhile, shows Jackie the Lazy D, which has the best water and finest grazing around, hoping she will decide to keep the ranch. After Bob catches Eason and Yates trying to rustle part of the Lazy D herd, Bob orders the ranch hands to round up $10,000 worth of cattle to pay off the bank note. At the Indian camp, Bob nearly swears his love to Jackie, and she vows never to return to the East. Yates admits to Sundown it was he whom Bob was chasing from the bank and is about to implicate Eason when he is shot. Bob shoots the rifle out of the unseen culprit's hand, and later sees Eason's hand wrapped in gauze. He is about to accuse Eason when he tells Jackie that Bob killed her father and she decides to leave the next day. Sundown, meanwhile, takes the wounded Yates to the Indian camp, where he confesses that Eason killed Dan. The next day, rustlers attack the Lazy D herd, and Bob fights Eason as he tries to escape town with the bank money. The sheriff arrests Eason for embezzlement and murder, and Sundown and Bob round up the cattle. Bob then abducts Jackie from the outgoing stage and heads home with her to the Lazy D.
