Synopsis
Dr. Daniel French, a brilliant surgeon at the police hospital who has a reputation for being a "Casanova," is currently having an affair with nurse Irene Blaine. One night, their tryst is interrupted when he is called to the scene of a gangster murder. French picks up many clues that go undetected by the police, and gives his reporter friend Slug the scoop. When a mysterious and beautiful woman arrives at the hospital badly beaten and unconscious, French is determined to save her life. He sits by her side day and night, eventually falling in love with her. After three days and a special injection, the woman revives, but maintains a frightened silence as to her identity and that of her assailants. When gangster boss Peter Lawton, who claimed he was unable to identify the woman, but was in fact the one who had ordered her beaten, finds out that she survived, he tells his thug Sammy to finish the job. The woman reveals herself to be Mary Dolan, and French remains committed to her after she, too, falls in love with him. Lawton tries to remove Mary from the hospital but she is protected by French, who becomes suspicious of Lawton. When Sammy attempts to enter Mary's room, he is stopped by Dr. Martin Nichols, an aspiring surgeon whom French has befriended. After a struggle, Sammy shoots Nichols, a guard, and French's assistant, Otto Hoffer, is killed by police later. After completing an operation, French treats Nichols' hand, and reluctantly informs him that due to the injury, he will never be able to perform surgery. After making the connection between Lawton and the earlier murder, French and Lawton confront Mary together. Although Mary witnessed the crime, she claims innocence and places the blame on Lawton. French suspends the jealous nurse Irene after she calls the Superintendant of Hospitals to have Mary's lengthy stay investigated. Lawton is admitted to the hospital for poisoning, but happily admits he was faking to evade an attack by a rival gang. To resolve their woes, French and Mary decide to confess all to the police and take the consequences. After secretly giving Lawton a poisoned drink in revenge for his damaged hand, Nichols informs French and Mary that the gangster has indeed died of poisoning. Having telephoned the police earlier, they now call them and tell them not to come, and are finally free to pursue their romance.

The film's pre-release titles are Dead on Arrival and Identity Unknown. According to the pressbook, sound engineer Earl Hayman recorded the "roar" of the 1933 Long Beach earthquake that occurred during filming. Hollywood Reporter incorrectly lists the director's name as "John Somnes."
