Synopsis
While deep sea diving off the South American coast, Papa Rico, the owner of a fishing boat, finds the statue of an idol, a remnant of the lost treasure of the Paracan Indians. When Manco Capac, the skipper of Papa's boat, sees the statue, he cuts Papa's air hose, casting the diver adrift to certain death, then claims the relic for himself. Later, Roger Bristol, the host of a television adventure show, purchases the idol from Manco and is inspired to film an episode dealing with the lost Paracan treasure. Accompanied by his astute secretary, Anne Stevens, and his son Robin, who is called Bob, Roger flies to South America, where Anne finds a map that indicates the treasure is located on a nearby island. Hoping to attract the attention of the locals, Anne flashes the statue at a small café. Her plan works as Manco approaches her table and offers to hire out his boat for sport fishing. Manco then introduces Pelu Rico, Papa's daughter, who has inherited the boat from her recently deceased father. The next day, they all sail the boat to the island, where Bob and Roger scuba dive, looking for the treasure, while Pelu leads Anne to the ruins of an ancient Paracan temple. When Anne accidentally drops her camera down a hole at the temple, it splashes, leading Anne to suspect there is water below. Later, Anne comments on the gold amulet that Manco wears around his neck, and when she wonders if it was part of the Paracan treasure, he denies it. The next day, Bob and Roger explore the area around the cove and discover an underwater cave leading to a cavern beneath the temple. From above, Manco listens as the divers penetrate the cavern. When Roger suggests that Pelu join Bob in his explorations the following day, Manco, possessive of Pelu, swims after them. As they enter the cavern, Pelu senses evil. While alone in one of the cave's chambers, Manco sees Papa's bobbing body, which has become snagged on the rocks. Ten days later, the expedition has still found no sign of the treasure. While scrutinizing some underwater photos, Anne notices an indentation at the bottom of the cavern that is the same size as the idol's base and realizes that the idol was designed to sit beneath the sea. Deducing that Manco's amulet is the missing eye of the idol, which will direct them to the treasure, Anne cajoles Manco into a card game and wins the necklace from him. After restoring the amulet to its rightful place, Roger dives to the bottom of the cavern and is about to position the idol when Manco suddenly stabs him from behind and slashes his air hose. Bob finds his father just in time, and helps him to the surface. Soon after, the sun strikes the temple, sending a shaft of light down to the cavern and illuminating the idol's eye, which points Manco to the treasure. Later, while strolling along the beach, Bob and Pelu come upon Papa's body and Pelu realizes that Manco, who lied that Papa died in a shark attack, killed him. That night, back at the camp, Manco, adorned with Paracan gold, leaps into the tent, after which Pelu confronts him about murdering her father. When Manco attempts to stab Bob, Roger drives him away at gunpoint, then declares that he is putting an end to the treasure hunt because it has already cost one life. Feeling that it is his duty to claim the treasure for his father, Bob asks Pelu to accompany him back to the cave. When Roger notices that Bob is gone, he and Anne pilot the boat toward the cave. As Pelu and Bob dive, Manco stalks them from shore and then plunges into the waters near the cave. After loading his spear gun, Manco shoots at Bob and when Bob fires back, the two begin to wrestle underwater. Just then, an earthquake rips apart the cliffs, and the cascading rocks crush Manco and seal the treasure room forever.
