Synopsis
Johnny Macklin is summoned by Wells Fargo to break up a gang of outlaws that is terrorizing the countryside near the town of Rimrock. The townspeople believe that an ex-riverboat gambler named Steve Corbin, who operates the town saloon, is behind the gang. When a miner celebrates his rich strike at the saloon, Steve signals singer Kitty Malone to discover the location of the mine. Kitty, who is in love with Steve, learns where the miner has hidden his mine map and also ascertains that the miner has not yet filed his claim. Later, Corbin's men kill the miner and file a claim on his mine. When Diane Foster, who manages the town newspaper, tries to organize a vigilante group to fight Corbin, Corbin mobilizes his men to prevent the group from forming. Macklin arrives in the newspaper office while Corbin's men are threatening Diane and chases them away. The Rimrock citizens then appoint Macklin marshal and Diane's father, Idaho Jim, his deputy. Macklin then warns all the men in the saloon that Rimrock now has a marshal who will enforce the law. Macklin's presence encourages Wells Fargo to re-establish their gold shipments, and Corbin decides to steal the shipment, not knowing that he is walking into Macklin's trap. Macklin captures two of Corbin's men, but when they come to trial, Corbin pays off the jury, and his men are found innocent. Determined to get rid of Macklin, Corbin hires some gunmen. Kitty has become jealous of Flo Vickers, another dance hall girl, and warns Macklin about the gunmen in exchange for his promise not to kill Corbin. Forewarned, Macklin survives the planned ambush. This time, Macklin takes the arrested men to the county seat, where Corbin will not be able to pack the jury. Before they can testify, however, Corbin shoots the men through the jail window and kills them. Believing that Kitty has betrayed him out of jealousy, Corbin arranges a trap to kill both her and Macklin. He sends Kitty on an errand to a deserted house and then sends Flo to tell Macklin that Corbin plans to kill her. Macklin rides to Kitty's rescue, and a suspicious Diane rouses the townspeople to follow him. In the ensuing gunfight, Kitty is killed. Macklin then goes after Corbin and, during their fight, accidentally breaks Corbin's neck. Now that the town is cleaned up, Idaho is appointed marshal while Macklin travels on.
