Synopsis

After the Civil War, when it appears as though the state of Texas will dissolve into separate territories, Texas Sen. Clarke Faulkner convinces the senate to call in the Texas Rangers to protect the citizens from anarchy. Later, in San Antonio, Clarke meets with his cohort, power-hungry politician Beau Laroux, who plans to take control of the western territory and is unhappy about the Rangers' involvement. Meanwhile, in San Antonio, cowboy Gary Conway meets Clarke's niece, a newspaper correspondent named Connie, who is also Laroux's fiancée. Gary and his brother Chuck are discussing the purchase of a cattle ranch, when Ranger Tom Banner tries to convince Gary to join up with the Rangers. Later, a train carrying a prisoner stops in San Antonio to refuel and is hijacked by renegades, who kill the prisoner. In El Paso, Chuck, who is a former Ranger, meets his sweetheart Catalina at the Crystal Palace Saloon. After they rob the Stockman National Bank, Chuck and his gang are chased by the Rangers. Later, Laroux and his henchman smuggle firearms to Comanche Chief Black Eagle, hoping to incite the Indians to attack a rival tribe so that they can frame the Rangers. After Gary learns that some Rangers were wounded during a bank robbery, Catalina tells him that Laroux is an ex-Ranger himself. Chuck then enters the saloon with a gunshot wound in his back, and Catalina realizes that he and Gary are brothers. After Chuck collapses, Laroux charges him with working for the renegades. Catalina later tells Gary that Chuck has rejoined the Rangers, so Gary decides to join up as well. The next morning, after Tom's father, Capt. Banner swears Chuck in, Laroux reports that Chuck has been killed. Tom, who is working with Laroux, admits to Gary that he shot Chuck, while Laroux delivers the weapons to Chief Black Eagle. Later, Connie gives Banner a copy of an article she has written, reporting a rumor that the Rangers are working with the renegades. Banner invites Connie to stay at the patrol office, but before her dispatches are sent to press, Laroux and Clarke alter them. On his way to Black Eagle's, Laroux is then stopped by some Rangers, who begin searching his wagons. Before they find the rifles, however, a renegade ambushes the patrol, and Laroux escapes. Later, Gary, Tom and their friend, Windy Hornblower, learn that four dead Rangers have been discovered in Ranger Sgt. Clint Mason's jurisdiction. At nearby Colby Pass, the men discover three of Laroux's wagons, which have been abandoned. Windy lights a fire summoning the Rangers, while the renegades raid some ammunition stockpiles. Aware that her previous dispatch was tampered with, Connie sends another and catches Clarke intercepting it. When Laroux learns that the Indians cannot operate the guns, he kills Clarke, who had threatened to report the matter to the Rangers. Catalina is then found dead in an apparent suicide, while Windy learns about the renegades' plan to incite the Indians. When Laroux tries to escape from Gary and Tom, he is shot in the back and dies. Later, Gary kisses Connie good-bye.
