Synopsis

When wealthy Italian merchant Ralph Clementi dies in an automobile accident, insurance agent Jeff is assigned to investigate. He suspects Clementi was murdered by one of his heirs, his young American wife Barbara or his stepsister Esther. Through retracing events leading up to the death, Jeff discovers several family secrets: Barbara, an ambitious singer, married Clementi for his money, while Esther harbored romantic feelings for Clementi and was jealous of the marriage. When Barbara tired of her husband, she rekindled her romantic relationship with Gene. During a rainstorm that simulates the conditions on the day of Clementi's death, evidence is revealed that leads Jeff to surmise that Barbara killed her husband. Wanting to escape with Gene, Barbara duped Clementi into driving to town, and then changed road signs, causing Clementi to become confused on his return home and crash the car. After the truth is revealed, Barbara plunges to her death at the same site while in flight from the police.
