Synopsis
After coming across the slain body of cowboy Zane Jenkins, renowned U.S. Marshal Jack McKenzie, also known as "Nevada," rides to the nearest ranch and there learns that a feud between rancher Joe Davis and Bill Corey and his ranching partner, Don Graham, has created violent havoc in the area. At the town saloon, Nevada reports Jenkins' murder and falsely identifies himself as his brother. Although Graham accuses Joe of killing Zane, one of Joe's hands, in order to cover the rustling raids he supposedly engineered against Graham and Corey's Double Diaman ranch, Joe insists that Graham is behind the murder and is also responsible for raids suffered at his Lazy X ranch. As tensions mount, Corey is shot by a masked gunman, who tries to flee, but is himself shot by Nevada. The gunman is revealed to be Slade Burnett, a Lazy X hand, and Graham immediately blames Joe for the crime, even though Joe is engaged to Corey's daughter Blanche. After Nevada manages to diffuse the situation, Sheriff Clancy appoints him as his new deputy. At the same time, Joe hires old cowpoke Sandy Hopkins, who has also just arrived in town, to work at the Lazy X. Banker Chalmers then informs Joe that he will not be issuing an extension on his ranch loan, which is due in two days. As a discouraged Joe is riding back to the Lazy X, the new deputy joins him and insists on checking out his ranch. Before the two arrive at the Lazy X, Sandy tells Pete, Murphy and the other hands about the stranger, and Pete reveals that Jenkins, his childhood friend, did not have a brother. Now suspicious of Nevada, Pete and the others ride to confront him, but the deputy eludes them and later jails Joe, finally revealing his identity to the sheriff. Sandy, meanwhile, informs Murphy about Joe's arrest, and Murphy vows to break his boss out of jail. Still posing as Jenkins' brother, Nevada rides to Graham's Double Diaman cabin and asks the rancher for help in bringing Jenkins' killer to justice. Nevada rides off, but when he spots Chalmers heading for Graham's cabin, he returns and eavesdrops as Graham and Chalmers, who has signed over Joe's loan note to Graham, plot to break Joe out of jail and kill him. In addition, the double-crossing Murphy agrees to scatter Joe's cattle to eliminate any chance that they can be rounded up in time to make the loan deadline. Nevada intercepts Murphy and Graham's men on their way to the jail, but Graham sneaks up on Nevada and captures him. Although Graham finds Nevada's marshal badge, he still plans to have Joe and Nevada killed. After Murphy, Chalmers and the others leave for the jail, however, an armed Sandy sneaks up to Graham's cabin and takes him by surprise. Identifying himself as Nevada's partner, Sandy ties up Graham, then races with Nevada to town to rescue Joe. The marshals arrive just as Graham's masked men are forcing Joe out of jail, and a gunfight ensues. After the thugs are overwhelmed, Nevada catches up with the fleeing Chalmers and arrests him. Later, Joe and Blanche thank the departing marshals for their help and accept their best wishes on their upcoming wedding.
